The Air Force has 700+ F-15C/D acft in active and Guard service combined. The plan is to replace a large portion of the Eagles by the F-22 Raptor (381 required, 183 ordered so far). However to cover all its bases, the USAF needs to augment the F-22 with the F-15C/D beyond 2025.
Therefor of the F-15C fleet the Air Force plans to retain 178 airframes which has already been identified by tail number. These acft has been choosen because of their relative youth, health and history of being good maintenance performers. The Air Force calls it the "Golden Fleet" and those in are being called "Golden Eagles".
Those that don't make the cut to be Golden Eagle will be retired at the rate of about 20 per year between now and 2018.
The 178 Golden Eagles will be the ones to get comprehensive upgrade, both in structure and capability. The biggest feature of the uograde is to replace the F-15's anlog radar with a new, active electronically |

Nice site with interesting pic's. Only hoped to find a little bit more info here like updates/grades done in the past (MSIP programme for example) and nowadays on the F-15C/D's (like the new radars, new radio equipment), exercises and deployments of Eagle units, book reviews etc. (some kind of forum). Maybe an idea for the future (something like www.f-16.net )? Willing to help of course, just drop me a line!
